By Whom

Jeevan Stem Cell Foundation, a registered public trust, was started on 24th September 1995.

Today, Jeevan Stem Cell Foundation operates 3 projects:

  • Public cord blood bank (2008) was established to enable quick and affordable access to matching stem cells from donated cord blood to Indian children living globally with blood cancers, Thalassemia and bone marrow diseases. Jeevan currently has over 6250 stem cell units ready for patients and is the largest active public cord blood bank in South Asia. The vision is to create an inventory of 30,000 stem cell units before 2022 and this will help over 60% of patients, especially children, to find a match.

It has been funded by a grant from the Government of Tamil Nadu, ONGC, Rotary Foundation, Rotary Club of Madras East, Cognizant Foundation, Street Edge Foundation (USA), Chaitanya Builders, TVH, Freemasons, Gimpex Foundation, Real Image Media Technologies, India Cements and Khivraj Motors, among others. Jeevan also received a loan of INR 15.4 crores from Technology Services Revolving Fund (IDA + IBRD + Government of India fund, managed by ICICI).

Till date we have received 894 requests and found 325 matches. Jeevan has facilitated nine transplants.

  • Adult Stem Cell Donor Registry (a.k.a. Bone marrow donor registry) was set up in June 2015 to create an Indian registry of 100,000 committed adult stem cell donors before 2022. It is funded through grants from Tata Trusts, The United Way of Chennai, Sundaram Finance and the Consulate General of Australia. Around 5300 potential donors from a pool of regular blood donors have already enrolled.
  • High resolution HLA laboratory (2013 HLA matching is the crucial component to identify a matching donor / Cord blood stem cell unit for a patient with blood cancer or Thalassemia. In 2013, Jeevan established a laboratory for high resolution HLA typing by Sanger Technology to provide affordable access to Indians to HLA typing of international standards, in India, with the shortest turn-around time of four days. In 2017, Jeevan established state of the art Next-Gen Sequencing HLA typing, which is the international gold standard in HLA Typing. Jeevan has been providing free HLA typing for patients and potential bone marrow donors managed by Sankalp India Foundation, Bengaluru and Mahesh Memorial Trust (Adyar Cancer Institute), Chennai. By this, we have facilitated forty successful transplants.

Jeevan operated one of the best Indian Blood Banks between 1995 and 2017. Some of the major contributions to the Transfusion Medicine domain by Jeevan are listed below. The Board decided to stop operating the non sustainable blood bank operations in January 2017 to focus on the stem cell activity. At the time of closure, Jeevan had collected 150,700 voluntary donations and released 377,000 units of the safest blood components to patients in and around Chennai.
